We won. Love Phoebe THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF PHOEBE HEMENWAY LEGERE AS DISTINGUISHED ARTIST IN RESIDENCE IN THE COMPUTER ARTS DEPARTMENT. MFA Computer Arts Chairman Bruce Wands announced today the appointment of Phoebe Hemenway Legere as School of Visual Arts Distinguished Multimedia Artist in Residence. Legere is a multi instrumentalist and inventor who sings her own scientificopoetic writings against the astounding and sumptuously dissonant textures of electroacoustic orchestrations. Legere and Morgan Powell were shortlisted for the Pulitzer Prize in Music for a work they co created called The Waterclown. (Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Ed London conductor ) The second part in a three part cycle, The Common Root of All Organisms, traces all life back to a common ancestor. These works represented a pinnacle of art/science research and synthesis. Phoebe Legere's CD Blue Curtain (2001 Einstein Records) was a collaboration with Ikue Morie, (DNA, John Zorn), who won the Prix Ars Electronic in 2001 and Jim Staley, (Founder of Roulette Intermedium.) Legere is a Ragdale Fellow, and is the composer of three experimental multimedia operas including a Native American/New Music DocuOpera called The Queen of New England (NYSCA), Her newest work, celebrating Astrophysics as a spiritual practice, is called Dark Energy. Legere is currently experimenting with a Multimedia Interface called The V Link. This Computer Interface uses the object oriented programming language of MAX/MSP/JITTER to trigger video and sound from Legere's documentary movie The Biological Hot Spots of the World. The video matrix, generating images of critically endangered animals and indigenous people, will communicate with Max objects, which in turn send out Electronic Computer composed music. Legere, a master improviser, jams with the machines, using unique performative gestures and infrared sensor Video Wands to generate computer music. . Her face is lit by a mask of LED lights ( LegereLichtmasken) Multiple video screens, half veiled, are lit from above. Phoebe Legere plays the Titano Midi Accordion and the Korg Triton Keyboard. She also plays Native American Cedar Flute and Hollow Tree Branches. Legere builds her electronic circuits by hand. She often comments wryly on the physics of electrons and invisible electrical behaviors both in her music and in her highly engaging conversation. "Ecology, Electricity, and Gender Equality are my primary themes. I feel that I will fulfill the Fluxus dream of total Intermedia Immersion if I don't electrocute myself first." says Legere.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM PHOEBE

I don't think I am going to have this new instrument ready in time for the Kitchen. It blew up in my face today. I touched a live wire to ground. Thats like a headon collision.

Electrons are like little furry invisible sperms and Protons are like rectums or pussys. Some atoms wanna give and some wanna take. I got it wrong and KABOOM. Thrilling. Luckily I was wearing sunglasses. People are pushing me because they think I'm going to do for installation art what I did for the accordion. The thing is, electricity is kind of tricky. The accordion is weird, but 120 AC volts right outta the wall is even weirder. I need time.

Pictures on the Radio is an amazing document.

The guy on the elephant is Jerry Cooney, the former Heavy Weight Champion of the world. The outdoor footage was shot by Hilary Knight, who designed my Hot Sauce label, and also happens to have the number one book on the Children's Best Seller List this week - Eloise Takes a Bath. The boy at the Pool is my friend Michael Bergen, who is a regular on Baywatch, and is a Calvin Klein Underwear model.

I am writing a book called "How to Have Balls" Should it be serialize in the Newsletter? Tell me what you think.

And then I am going to MOVIE PREMIERE for the movie I have been working on ALL MONTH night and day writing the music and narrating. REBUILDING LIVES is the name of it. I have written a song called I Can Do It. The movie is about severely disabled children and what little dears they are.
They to an Artist's colony for two weeks. I am writing a symphony about DIRT.
And then to the GALAPAGOS on August 21 to retrace Darwin's footsteps as part of my " BIOLOGICAL HOTSPOTS of the EARTH" film project.

Co Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in music (with Morgan Powell) for The Waterclown NYSCA Grant and commision to write an opera A true story called "The Queen of New England" go to http://home.earthlink.net/~superbytch to see the photos.

Had a Concert version of the opera in New York City Phoebe Played Queen Weetamoo, a real Native American princess who used to march around wearing a lot of makeup and fabulous jewelry with an army of 500 men who followed her everywhere The Tampa Opera House will be doing a full cast production in 2002. Its really serious

And now Phoebe is at an Artist's Colony in Lake Forest Illinois. She has just completed and recorded a new musical work about the History of Life on Earth from the first Proto Bacteria to Homo Afarensis ( Lucy) our common mother. She taught herself Biology in ten days

Now she is flying up to Wisconsin to open for Grammy Winner John MucCutcheon at a big Festival where she will do a one woman version of "The Queen of New England" for a thousand people.

God it is all so exciting but listen to this Phoebe has been asked to accompany a National Geographic Expedition to Tibet and the Nature Conservancy has paid for her ticket and bought her a video camera because she is the "ETHNO MUSICOLOGIST" on the Expedition Team. She will be climbing the Holy Mt. Gonga

And remember: The Tibetans believe in POLYANDRY and so does Phoebe!!!

Phoebe just came home from Northern Wisconsin where she did a BIG FOLK festival for 1000 people. Phoebe did a one woman version of THe Queen of New England (her new opera), and, at the end, the huge and beautiful Chief of the Ojibwe presented Phoebe with an Eagle Feather wrapped in leather. It was a very important ceremony. It looks like Phoebe will be performing with the Cleveland Symphony again in 2003!
